Why These Two Numbers Matter More Than Most Drivers Realise

Tyres are the only part of your vehicle in contact with the road — four palm-sized contact patches bearing the entire weight of the car. The air pressure inside each tyre determines how that contact patch is shaped, while tread depth determines how effectively it channels water away and maintains grip. Over-inflation creates the opposite problem: the contact patch narrows, putting all the load through the tyre's centre strip. Braking distances increase, ride quality hardens, and the tyre becomes more vulnerable to impact damage from potholes. Neither extreme is a safe operating state.

Tread wear compounds these risks. Rain is channelled away from the contact patch by the grooves cut into the tread. As those grooves wear down, water has nowhere to go and can lift the tyre off the road surface entirely — a phenomenon known as aquaplaning (or hydroplaning). Check Pressure When Tyres Are Cold

Tyre pressure readings are only accurate when the tyres are 'cold' — meaning the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours or driven fewer than one mile at low speed. Heat from driving increases air pressure inside the tyre by up to 4–6 psi, which can mask under-inflation. Do Not Use the Tyre Sidewall Pressure Figure

The number moulded into your tyre sidewall (e.g. 'Max. Press. 51 PSI') is the maximum pressure the tyre structure can safely hold — it is not your target inflation pressure. Inflating to this figure will result in a dangerously stiff tyre with reduced contact area and a harsher, less controlled ride. Always use the vehicle manufacturer's recommended pressure instead.

Locate your vehicle's recommended tyre pressures

Before touching a gauge, find the correct target figures. Open the driver's door and look for a sticker on the door jamb — it will list the recommended pressure in psi for both front and rear tyres, often with a separate figure for a loaded vehicle. If the sticker is missing, check the owner's manual. Note both front and rear values, as they frequently differ.

The federal legal minimum is 2/32 inch; most safety authorities recommend considering replacement at 4/32 inch for meaningful wet-weather grip.

Use the penny test as a quick secondary check

Hold a US penny with Lincoln's head pointing down and insert it into a tread groove. If the top of Lincoln's head is fully visible, the tread is at or below 2/32 inch — the legal minimum — and the tyre should be replaced promptly. If part of the head disappears into the tread, you have more than 2/32 inch remaining. For a 4/32 inch check, substitute a quarter: if the top of Washington's head is visible, you are at or below 4/32 inch.

Record your findings and set a reminder to recheck

Note the date, each tyre's pressure reading, and tread depth measurements — a simple note in your phone works well. Tyres naturally lose roughly 1 psi per month under normal conditions, and more during cold weather as air contracts. Set a monthly reminder to recheck pressure. If any tyre showed significantly uneven wear or is approaching 4/32 inch, schedule a professional tyre inspection sooner rather than later.

Reading the Results: What Uneven Wear Tells You

The pattern of wear across and around your tyre carries diagnostic information. Centre wear — where the middle of the tread is more worn than the edges — is the classic signature of chronic over-inflation. Edge wear, where both shoulders are more worn than the centre, points to persistent under-inflation. One-sided wear, where the inner or outer edge is significantly more worn, typically indicates an alignment problem rather than a pressure issue. Addressing the root cause — not just replacing the tyre — is what prevents the pattern from recurring.

Cupping or scalloping (a wavy, uneven wear pattern around the tyre's circumference) often points to a suspension component that is worn or loose.
